WASHINGTON, D.C. — The lone republican candidate from West Virginia seeking a U.S. Senate seat in 2024 thus far just received an endorsement from a long-tenured Senator from Texas.
Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va. has been backed by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
“I’m proud to endorse Alex Mooney for the U.S. Senate in West Virginia,” Cruz said in a statement to Fox News Digital Friday. “Alex is a friend, he’s a fighter and a strong conservative who will ferociously defend the Second Amendment, be a champion for American energy, prioritize bringing jobs to West Virginia, and faithfully and aggressively represent the values of the Mountain State in the Senate.”
Mooney said the Senate needs a “proven conservative voice” from West Virginia. He has also received an endorsement from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
The congressman is the only Republican in the running for the seat so far, but an announcement is expected sometime soon from the governor on his political future.
Gov. Jim Justice is expected to announce his plans as early as next week. Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear he will endorse the governor if he so chooses to run for U.S. Senate.
Meanwhile, Manchin has yet to announce what he’ll do in 2024.
