Did you know Mortal Kombat 11 has a hidden graphics option that changes everything into a pixelated mess? appeared on www.eventhubs.com by EventHubs.

It seems to only work on consoles

The Mortal Kombat games are so stuffed with content and obscure secrets that players continue to find new things within them, even if other people have technically discovered it first.

Despite the game being almost 4 years old now, we witnessed something we’d never seen before in Mortal Kombat 11 when Goku Herreros recently stumbled across a hidden graphics option that transforms everything into a real mess.

Using this strange mode appears to replace every 3D model in MK11 with colored symbols / pixels whether they be characters, backgrounds or visual effects.

It almost looks like the most aggressive scanlines you’ve ever seen at first glance though that may not be exactly what’s going on.

The initial discovery of this option dates back to at least early 2020, which has been dubbed ASCII Mode by the community since it makes MK11 look like it is rendering the models using limited ASCII symbols / colors.

Some users postulate this ASCII Mode served as some sort of visual debug mode or tool for the developers, but unfortunately, we can’t find much else for documentation or solid information about it after all this time.

It’s unclear to us if the game is literally rendering ASCII symbols or just a grid of colored pixels, which we could see as being potentially useful for measurements or similar tasks.

Mortal Kombat 11’s ASCII Mode can easily be turned on for console players by going to the main menu and hold down all 4 shoulder buttons plus L3/LS and then press O/B to toggle the option.

You’d think this would be useful for weaker PCs to run the game, but we were unable to activate it on the computer the same way and haven’t found confirmation of the mode being available there too.

While ASCII Mode has technically been floating around for a few years now, it’s interesting to see that stuff like this is still out there that over 99% of the game’s millions of owners don’t know even exists.
