A Good Person ???½
(MA) 128 minutes

In life, Florence Pugh is probably best known for her extreme fashion choices on the red carpet. On the screen, she’s taken a more serious course, scoring Oscar and BAFTA nominations for her role as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women (2019) and putting in a quietly impressive performance in Lady Macbeth (2016), a revenge tragedy inspired by a Nikolai Leskov novella.

Now she’s starring as another anguished character in A Good Person, the new film by actor and director Zach Braff.

In a sense, it’s a follow-up to Garden State (2004), Braff’s earlier film with the same setting, his hometown of South Orange, New Jersey, and the same themes of guilt, redemption and an addiction to prescription drugs. Allison (Pugh) works for a pharmaceutical company and is about to marry Nathan (Chinaze Uche), her school sweetheart, when the car she’s driving crashes, killing Nathan’s sister and her husband. In despair, Allison ends her engagement and hides away, surrendering to her craving for OxyContin, the painkiller she was prescribed after the accident.

Braff could never be accused of understatement. In the opening scenes, Allison and Nathan are so thoroughly consumed by their love for one another that their bliss serves as an unmissable warning of the devastation to come.

Nonetheless, it’s another forceful performance from Pugh. No matter how far she falls, Allison never quite loses her edge. There’s a compelling scene in a bar where she meets two former classmates who’ve become small-time drug dealers. After teasing her with the claim that they can get anything she wants, they set about systematically humiliating Allison with taunts about how much she’s changed from the self-confident snob they knew at school. But it takes a while; she doesn’t go down easily.

Things pick up when Allison eventually joins an AA group, which happens to include Nathan’s father, Daniel (Morgan Freeman). A retired cop, he’s successfully controlling the alcoholism that destroyed his relationship with his son. Daniel is also raising his teenage granddaughter Ryan (Celeste O’Connor), who was orphaned in the car crash, although she’s proving to be more of a handful than he could have imagined.
