Serena Williams‘ husband is concerned by the maternal mortality of black women appeared on www.tennisworldusa.org by Lorenzo Ciotti.

Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian has decided to address the issue of maternal mortality in the US on Twitter, which is said to be higher among black women, as revealed by an NCHS study. But it’s not just health care that’s to blame, and Ohanian makes that clear.

Facing a very difficult birth themselves, Alexis and Serena have already experienced the scare. Alexis took to social media to express her concern about the high maternal mortality rate in the United States. According to the recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics, the United States had the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries in 2018, with 17 deaths for every 100,000 live births.

This rate nearly doubled in 2021, with 33 deaths for every 100,000 live births. The report also revealed that there are large disparities in maternal mortality rates based on race and ethnicity.

“We’re failing Black women the worst”

Ohanian tweeted: “America, this is a crisis.

And we’re failing Black women the worst (the disparity between race & ethnicity also exists when you normalize for education, wealth, etc because it’s systemic).”

In 2018, Serena Williams told CNN about her life-threatening complications during pregnancy.

She called on lawmakers to take action to reduce maternal mortality rates: “We must come together to fight for what is right.” Maternal mortality has been a persistent problem in the United States, especially with black women disproportionately affected.

Since studies show black women are three to four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than white women, this disparity is attributed to systemic racism. This leads to biases in health care and inadequate access to quality care, which does not distinguish socio-economic conditions.

We recall Serena William retired from tennis in Seprtember 2022, playing her last match at the Us Open, losing against Ajla Tomlianovic.
