3 Big Challenges Career Coaches Face With Their Clients

What are some of the more difficult career coaching experiences you’ve had? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Marty Nemko, Career Coach, on Quora:

Three come to mind:

  • When a client has been terminated. If s/he was part of a major layoff, it hasn’t been so difficult to help him or her find a new, sometimes even a better, job. But if my client was one of just a few to be laid off or was fired, even in a good job market, especially if my client is not in an in-fashion demographic, s/he usually has a tough time landing a decent job even if using solid job-search strategies.
  • Career changers. It’s not easy. Training is often required, which usually means months or years with little or no income and likely a significant outlay for the training. Then, you have to convince an employer to hire you over someone with experience. If an employer is open to a newbie, s/he usually pays badly, the job is mind-numbing, or s/he hires Cousin Gomer. And too often, the career changer isn’t sufficiently happier in their new career than in their old one to justify all the time, money, and effort in getting into a new career—They bring their weaknesses and issues to the new job.
  • Clients of the “wrong” demographic. Increasingly, hiring is based in part on factors other than merit. Clients of an out-of-fashion race, gender, or age, have a harder time of it.

Conversely, I’m particularly gratified when my efforts have helped clients of good ability and drive get a deserved promotion, a new and better job, or succeed in self-employment.
