Barns of Rose Hill will host author talks this weekend at 95 Chalmers Court, Berryville.
• Terry Alford, a historian and professor emeritus at Northern Virginia Community College, will talk about his latest book “In the Houses of Their Dead: The Lincolns, the Booths and the Spirits” from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
• Karen Schaufeld will read from her collection of children’s stories, including “The Lollipop Tree,” “How to Eat a Peach” and her latest work, “Vultures, A Love Story” from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Laurel Ridge Community College’s Workforce Solutions will host a trades information session from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 in Alson H. Smith Hall, 173 Skirmisher Lane, Middletown.
This free information session is an open house-style event that introduces a variety of trades professions. Attendees will learn about HVAC, plumbing and electrical courses, heavy equipment operator training, construction project management, mechatronics and welding courses and funding options.

Winchester Medical Center
Winchester Medical Center has been named a 2022-2023 High Performing Hospital for 12 procedures and conditions by U.S. News & World Report.
“High Performing” is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. In addition, WMC was named a “Best Regional Hospital” in the Shenandoah Valley and is ranked sixth in the state this year.
Winchester Medical Center received accolades for being “High Performing” in the following common adult procedures and conditions, reflecting care that was significantly better than the national average as measured by factors such as patient outcomes: aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, hip replacement, knee replacement, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, pneumonia and stroke.
U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Fewer than half of all hospitals received any high performing rating, and only four earned this rating in all procedures and conditions. Of the 122 Virginia hospitals evaluated, only 17 met U.S. News standards for a “Best Regional Hospital” ranking.
Nationwide, only 12% of hospitals earned the elite “Best” honors. The methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as survival rates, patient experience, and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home.

Valley Heart/Vascular
The Valley Health Heart & Vascular Center at Winchester Medical Center has earned a Gold Seal of Approval for Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification from The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. WMC is one of 14 facilities in the U.S. to earn the CCC certification.
Offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association, Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification is the premier cardiovascular certification for hospitals that demonstrate high-quality care using evidence-based, guidelines-driven treatment and foster collaboration throughout the system of care.
The cardiac team treats a wide range of conditions, including coronary heart disease and heart attack, arrhythmias, heart failure and heart valve disease.
This marks the second time the cardiovascular program at WMC has received The Joint Commission’s two-year certification. In 2021, Heart & Vascular physicians and staff had more than 26,000 patient encounters for cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment services.
