5 Reasons Why We Love The Tesla Model 3 (5 Reasons Why We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors).

Tesla has been at the forefront of electric vehicle sales ever since they released the Roadster back in 2008. Since then, they’ve rocked the automotive industry with other revolutionary cars like the Model S and Model X, but Teslas are out of most people’s reach since they cost an absurd amount of money… until the Model 3 came around at least. Subscribe to HotCars Premium to read about the five EVs we’d still buy rather than the Tesla Model 3.

The Model 3 is Teslas’ entry-level vehicle, and it starts at just under $50,000. Sure, that’s not incredibly cheap, but the base model does come equipped with a plethora of fun gimmicks, and a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery that allows the electric motor to produce 271 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. All of this sounds good on paper, but let’s dive a bit deeper into what the Model 3 is all about, and see if Tesla truly is as great as people make them out to be.

10 We Love: Performance

As we’ve stated, the standard Model 3 already has plenty of power, and as a result, it can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.8 seconds. Hold your horses, this might not sound too impressive since Tesla’s flagship vehicle, the Model S Plaid can do the same in under 2 seconds, but keep in mind, that’s only the base model, and it’s rear-wheel-drive.

The top-tier Model 3 Performance has an 82 kWh battery at its disposal, and when it does its magic, it can teleport the mid-sized electric sedan to 60 mph from stationary in the real world in just 3.5 seconds, on par with most high-performance sports cars nowadays like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

9 We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors: Pricey

The Model 3 isn’t excruciatingly expensive… for a Tesla-built product, but in the grand scheme of things, the Model 3 is unrighteously overpriced. Take for instance one of its main competitors, the BMW i4.

Although the electric Beemer might have a higher starting price than the Tesla, it offers a vast array of features and more impressive performance figures, and overall, it’s just a better-built car, but more on that later.

8 We Love: Range

There are two main reasons why Teslas are selling like hotcakes, apart from the obvious status symbol they act as, and that’s performance and charging times. The base Model 3 can achieve up to 273 miles on a single charge, and if you were to pay extra for the Long Range Model 3, you’d be able to achieve up to 358 miles.

Not only does it travel far, but by having a Tesla, you’re allowed access to Tesla’s Supercharge Network, a wide range of fast chargers scattered around countries across the globe. These charging stations allow you to charge up your Tesla for up to 200 miles in as little as 15 minutes.

7 We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors: Boring-Looking Exterior

Don’t get us wrong, the Model 3 is an attractive vehicle, but it has no chance of snapping people’s necks as you drive by, and unfortunately, they’re starting to look dated as carmakers are starting to pump up new, innovative exterior designs.

The Model 3 is arguably also the least beautiful Tesla made at this moment, well, apart from the Model Y of course, and we can’t see them making any substantial changes to its exterior anytime soon.

6 We Love: Minimalistic Interior Design

Following the aesthetic design of the exterior, the cabin space of the Model 3 is also very bland and lacks much character, but in this case, it works in favor of the Tesla.

Instead of having an arsenal of buttons and dials, the Model 3 has a very sleek interior with no clutter. On top of that, its seats are faux leather, its air vents are integrated beautifully, and it has a gargantuan panoramic moon roof.

5 We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors: Complicated To Use

As all good things are, there have to be some drawbacks too, and in the Model 3’s case, these almost outweigh the pros. Despite the simplistic design of the Model 3’s cabin, it’s exactly the opposite to operate.

For instance, since there are no physical buttons to press or dials to turn – apart from the steering wheel – adjusting the seats, the temperature, and even just the volume inside is more difficult a task than ever before.

4 We Love: Impressive Standard Technology

We all know Teslas are supposed to be technologically superior to most cars for sale at the moment, and even their base trim levels, this is true. As standard, the Model 3 comes fitted with heated front seats, aluminum wheels – albeit covered with plastic hubcaps – as well as adaptive cruise control, and Tesla’s semi-autonomous Autopilot system.

Sounds like the dream right? Well… there’s a little more to it.

3 We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors: Lack Of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The nail in the coffin for the Model 3’s infotainment system has to be the fact that it doesn’t come offered with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay – a feature that even some budget-friendly econoboxes have as standard.

Just so we’re clear, the Model 3 does not only lack it in its base model, but there is no option for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or SiriusXM satellite radio, so you’ll forever be stuck with Tesla’s navigation system, and with the way they do things.

2 We Love: Practicality

Since Tesla’s batteries are mounted at the bottom of the car’s chassis, not only does it allow for more interior room everywhere, but also a lower center of gravity allowing it to handle more precisely than you’d expect, but we digress.

Another noteworthy feature of the Model 3 is the fact that it has both front- and rear storage space, and this is what most people consider to be called a trunk-frunk combination.

1 We’d Rather Buy One Of Its Competitors: Build Quality

Teslas might be expensive, and highly sought-after, but the matter of fact is that Teslas are built with horrendous, unacceptable build quality in mind. It starts in the interior with rattles all over and cheap materials, but on the outside, things get even worse.

Various owners have complained about their Teslas’ paint fading and chipping off prematurely, the panel gaps being inconsistent, and highly noticeable, and worst of all, technology failures ranging from little inconveniences regarding the infotainment system to larger issues concerning the powertrain.
