Ball, NASA team on cosmic-explosion study.
Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., a division of Broomfield-based Ball Corp. (NYSE: BALL), will provide satellite equipment and testing services to NASA for a planned study on cosmic explosions as part of the agency’s Survey and Time-domain Astrophysical Research Explorer (STAR-X) mission.
University of Colorado researchers will supply the mission with UV telescope technology.
The nine-month STAR-X study “will use two wavelength regions – X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) – to study astrophysical phenomenon,” Ball said in a news release. “The agile observatory will have the ability to orient rapidly to capture rare and brief cosmic events, such as supernova explosions, that have an outsized impact on the Universe.”
