Eubank Sr lays into own son for acting more like Mayweather than Tyson appeared on www.express.co.uk by George Glinski.
Chris Eubank Sr has laid into his son Chris Eubank Jr for picking to be like Floyd Mayweather over ‘men that led by example’ like Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. The British boxing legend brought trainer Tunde Ajayi to tears as he reflected on his turbulent relationship with his son.
Speaking during Ajayi and Spencer Fearon’s Stamina For Sale podcast, he said: “I believe in him, but he doesn’t believe in me. I’ve let go… I’ve done nothing but gift this young man a career, a name, a face… I’m gonna have my boy tell me he’s boss? He doesn’t appreciate how good things have been.”
He continued: “You’ve got people you aspire to be like. He [Chris Eubank Jr] picked Floyd Mayweather as he shows the bling, money, girls. Fabulous fighter. As a man? Don’t talk to me about him. Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, they’re men, they lead by example.”
Eubank Sr worked alongside coach Ronnie Davies in an advisory role for much of Eubank Jr’s career, but in 2021 Next Gen recruited the services of Roy Jones Jr to head up his camps. Eubank Sr became less involved in his son’s career as a result but was invited to join Jr ahead of his blockbuster showdown with Conor Benn – scheduled to take place on October 8.
The fight was of course cancelled after Benn returned adverse findings for the banned substance clomifene in a drugs test carried out by VADA leading to the cancellation of the bout. However, before these findings, Sr was adamantly against the fight and refused to give his blessing as he believed the career-lowest 157lb limit was too big of a cut for Eubank Jr to make healthily.
“I made it very clear three months ago that this fight isn’t going to happen because he is my son and I’ve got to protect him,” Eubank Sr continued. “These people are attempting to murder the boy. And it’s clear to me but not to anybody else; if you’re a fighter, if you’ve lived the life of a fighter and you know what it is to lose weight, my son’s been protected, and I brought him up good in boxing.

“But he doesn’t want to listen, he wants to be the boss so I said ‘go ahead, I don’t think you should have the fight, I think you’d get the same money for fighting Liam Smith, then you have Billy Joe Saunders, then you have Canelo and that’s your career.”
“I told Nigel ‘Don’t come to these speaking engagements; it’s going to be too much pressure on you because you let them lead your son into a pit, a snare’,” Eubank Sr added. “That boy’s clean, a clean man and a great fighter, but you have toddlers looking after us fighters, toddlers.
