James Gunn Shares Love for 2 Obscure DC Characters During Studio Meeting appeared on screenrant.com by ScreenRant.
During an introductory meeting with the Warner Bros. Discovery staff, new DC films co-CEO James Gunn shares his love for some bizarre DC characters.
James Gunn has revealed his love for some surprising DC characters while addressing the Warner Bros. Discovery staff for the first time. DC Studios has been at the center of some serious shakeups since the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, which led to the cancelation of the upcoming Batgirl film while it was in post-production, among many other wide-ranging decisions from CEO David Zaslav. Last month, DC Films president Walter Hamada left the company and was replaced by the surprising duo of The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran and writer/director James Gunn.
Per Deadline, Gunn and Safran just had their first official global Zoom meeting with the Warner Bros. Discovery staff this week, where Zaslav introduced the two new co-chairmen and co-CEOs. During the conversation, the pair shared their love for various DC Films projects, with Safran specifically pointing out his love for the 2018 hit Aquaman and 2019’s Shazam!. Gunn followed that up with praise for Superman and Batman, but in typical Gunn style, he shared his love for more obscure DC characters: the Metal Men and Bat-mite.
The Metal Men are a group of robots with advanced AI who were created by Dr. Will Magnus. Named Gold, Iron, Lead, Mercury, Tin, and Platinum, they were a minor group of heroes who infrequently interacted with other DC characters during their original run. On the other hand, Bat-mite is an imp who reveres Batman and wishes to emulate him in a way that is reminiscent of the Generation VII Pokémon Mimikyu and its imitation of the much cuter Pikachu. He is a being from the Fifth dimension and has access to supremely advanced technology, which he sometimes uses to put Batman into perilous situations so he can watch in awe as the hero gets himself out of them.
Now that Gunn has expressed his love for these characters, fans are already beginning to wonder if he will find a way to incorporate either of them into the upcoming slate of DC projects. However, Gunn and Safran have not announced any new films or television shows that will be in development under their supervision. While it may come to pass that one of their upcoming projects more directly involves the characters, there is one major place in the canon of the DC Universe that they would seem to fit best.
Many projects in the DCU are more downbeat or serious superhero films that focus less on humor and might not have a space for characters as outwardly goofy as the Metal Men or Bat-mite. However, ??James Gunn himself has created a property with a much more elastic universe and an over-the-top sense of humor: the Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker, which launched on HBO Max this January and has a second season coming soon. That series and the film it follows have made a habit of using sarcastic humor to throw barbs at various other DCU characters, so it would make perfect sense for these campier characters to fit into that corner of the universe, which has already introduced more offbeat heroes like Polka-Dot Man and Weasel.
