“I feel like a different person. I feel ashamed of myself,” he told the crowd.
“It feels so personal, such an intimate moment to be shared with so many people.
“It’s fine when Scott does it,” Styles said, before adding, “I’ll be discussing this with my therapist at length. At length.”
However, Styles’ giving into his audience’s peer pressure has sparked national debate in Australia.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s Thomas Mitchell filed an article asking “Should Australians be proud Harry Styles did a shoey?” before adding that the act “does paint a worrying picture of the Australian cultural conversation.”
Australia morning show Today also ran footage of the incident, before the hosts decided the tradition was “yuck”.
One commenter online declared the fact Styles had done the shoey meant he needed to leave the country as soon as possible.
“Please free Harry from Australia – what is a shoey and why does he have to do it?” they said.
Styles is due to bring his Love on Tour show to Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium on March 7.
