Meeks: In Ukraine, Russia ‘failed’ to meet its own expectations appeared on www.ny1.com by Kevin Frey.

A year after Russia first launched its invasion of Ukraine, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee argues Russia has failed to meet its own expectations.

Rather than sweep across the country to conquer it, Rep. Gregory Meeks said, Russian troops have been disorganized and unable to achieve their most basic goals.

The NATO alliance remains united, not divided.

What You Need To Know

  • “Russia thought that the West would not stick with it. That’s not true,” Rep. Meeks said, arguing Russia has “failed” to meet its own expectations in the war
  • Despite some Republicans questioning the future of U.S. involvement, Meeks insists he is not concerned about public support waning
  • Following President Joe Biden’s surprise trip to the war-torn capital earlier this week, Meeks said it looks like the president took the same train as he did to get there from Poland

“Russia thought that the West would not stick with it. That’s not true,” the Queens Democrat said.

Last spring, just months after Russia first launched its attack, Meeks paid a visit to Kyiv alongside then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers.

Following President Joe Biden’s surprise trip to the war-torn capital earlier this week, Meeks said it looks like the president took the same train as he did to get there from Poland.

“It’s a long ride. You are nervous at times. I know, I was,” Meeks said of the train journey. “As you’re driving past certain places, you see checkpoints and soldiers that are making sure that you’re secure.”

When asked if he will visit Ukraine again, he told Spectrum News it would not surprise him if he did.

Over the past year, the U.S. has provided tens of billions of dollars for Ukraine’s defense, including surface-to-air missiles, tanks and other material.

Despite some Republicans questioning the future of U.S. involvement, Meeks insists he is not concerned about public support waning, saying an “overwhelming” majority of the public and members of Congress are “rock solid” on the assistance for Ukraine.

In an interview with Spectrum News, Derek Chollet, the counselor of the U.S. State Department, explained the stakes in Ukraine as follows: “Russia controls roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory, and it is a very very tough fight, which is why it’s so important for us to, working with our allies and partners, provide Ukraine with the defense assistance that it needs,” Chollet said.

How the war ends is a question that remains open-ended.

Meeks said it will be up to Ukraine to decide what that looks like. And he said he “would hope” the fight will be over by the time the second anniversary comes around.

Meeks expressed some optimism that Russia has not made major gains so far during the winter months.
