Despite rumours of a late 2022 release, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 may not launch until 2023 due to being ‘new gen only.’
While EA has announced that it’s in development, there are no formal details about the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. However, the game is expected to be properly unveiled at the Star Wars Celebration event in May and previous rumours pointed to a potential 2022 release.
The most recent rumours, however, say this is no longer the case and that EA won’t launch the sequel until 2023.
The reason for this is because it will be ‘new gen only,’ meaning it is skipping the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and will only release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as PC.
While this is disappointing news for anyone who has yet to get their hands on either of the newer consoles, it’s increasingly likely that the older formats will be left behind in 2023 and beyond – with God Of War Ragnarök, for example, rumoured to be Sony’s last cross-gen game.
One other interesting detail is that the sequel will supposedly be dropping the Fallen Order subtitle, making it just Star Wars Jedi 2, unless it receives a new subtitle to replace it.
In retrospect, this isn’t that surprising. Back in January, when EA finally admitted it’s making a sequel, it described it as the ‘next title in the Star Wars Jedi franchise’ rather than Fallen Order 2.
This information comes from GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb, who was among those claiming the game would release by this Christmas. However, it sounds like the release window was pushed back to accommodate EA’s plans.
‘It’s going to be new gen only, where it’s PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and then of course PC,’ he says in his most recent GrubbSnax podcast. ‘One of the reasons that they’re going to be able to do that is because it’s not coming out till 2023. This game is for sure now not coming out till 2023.’
Grubb also reiterates that the sequel will be announced during Star Wars Celebration, which will run from May 26 to May 29. Even though such an announcement isn’t mentioned on the agenda, Grubb is confident that it will make an appearance.
It’s not the only Star Wars game fans will be hoping to see during the event, however. At least seven more are known to be in development, including a first person shooter from Respawn (the same studio behind Fallen Order and the sequel) and Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse.
Later on in the podcast, Grubb shared plot details for the illusive Super Mario animated movie, which, coincidentally, has also been pushed back from a Christmas 2022 release to 2023.
