“Playing at her best, there was no way that anybody could beat her”: Evert sees comparisons between Alcaraz and Serena Williams domination appeared on tennisuptodate.com by Jack Tate.
The dominating tennis of Carlos Alcaraz reminds former player Chris Evert of Serena Williams and her level when she was dominating the WTA side of the sport.
Alcaraz has been utterly impressive this year losing only one match of the 16 he played. He won two trophies and almost won another one but an injury prevented him from beating Norrie in the Rio Open final. It’s been utterly dominant and when he’s playing well it generally seems to be quite dominant.
It reminds Evert of Serena Williams and how she dominated the sport during her best days:
“I think Carlos will improve their game because they’re going to have to play better than their best when they play him if they want to beat him. He’s not unbeatable by any means, but at his best, he is. I almost think it’s like when Serena Williams dominated the women’s game and she was playing at her best, there was no way that anybody could beat her. And if she was a little off, that’s when the players could beat her.”
Despite his impressive tennis, Evert pointed out that he’s going to have bad days as well:
“I think the current players will have to play out of the box, so to speak, play out of their comfort zone, and they’re going to have to take more chances and more risks. And that’s why I say I think Carlos will improve their game because they’re going to have to play better than their best when they play him if they want to beat him. Everybody’s human. Nobody’s perfect. And Carlos is going to have some bad days.”
