VFX artist creates video of Heath Ledger’s Joker without makeup in The Dark Knight. Watch appeared on indianexpress.com by The Indian Express.

Late Australian actor Heath Ledger gave one of his most iconic performances as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film The Dark Knight, which was released six months after his tragic death. He not only won a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, his portrayal of the Joker is still talked about as the best ever.

While the Joker wore heavy white makeup that showed black dark circles below the eyes and a menacing haphazardly drawn smiley on his lips. If you have ever wondered what Ledger’s face would have looked like beneath the makeup, a video on YouTube shows exactly that. VFX artist Gda Tyler recently posted the video of Ledger emoting the scenes without makeup using deepfake technology.

Watch the video below:

The artist shared the challenges he faced while creating the video. “This uses the DeepFaceLab AMP model. I tried using the DF-UDT model but didn’t get the result I wanted. As for the eyes, some extreme left-right directions didn’t work out well as well as looking up. So for some scenes I decided to just use the original eyes because they lined up well. As for the color matching being non-existent that’s due to the makeup color. I tried to edit it before training the model, but just made things worse. I could have tried manual color matching to get it closer, but that’s a bit beyond my current skillset. All in all, another test with the AMP model and overall I’m satisfied. As always lots of improvements to be made, but still learning this software as time goes on,” it said in the description.

Posted on March 30, the video has received more than 28,000 views.

“You can really see how Heath forms his words and barely moves his lips to give his voice a sinister tone, masterful,” commented a user. “This is incredible.. you really can see how an amazing of an actor health was…he is ever better at acting than Artificial Intelligence which is clearly visible,” said another. “We can indeed see the deep fake is not perfect, but it looks really cool nonetheless, especially since it’s not an easy exercise. When it works and blends in, it’s incredible though. Nice job!” appreciated yet another.
