Coney recounts how he witnessed the most bizarre tournament match in Super Smash Bros. history appeared on www.eventhubs.com by EventHubs.
In a recent video, Coney recounted what he refers to as the most bizarre tournament match in Super Smash Bros. history. These events ended up taking place back in 2010 back when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the latest entry in the Super Smash Bros. series.
One of the top Marth users at the time, MikeHaze, found himself going up against a rather obscure but skilled player known as “ook.” This was at a tournament ran by MLG which allowed the “Green Greens” Kirby stage even though the stage was typically banned at almost all other events.
What made ook a particularly challenging player for MikeHaze was the fact that he was a Donkey Kong player. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Donkey Kong more closely resembles a “sword character” more so than the grappler archetype he’s been known for in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Although Donkey Kong very clearly lost to most top tiers in Brawl, it’s speculated that Donkey Kong had an even or favorable match up against Marth. Combined with MikeHaze’s unfamiliarity with characters outside of top tier made this a difficult match for MikeHaze.
Eventually, the set went to game three with both players on the board. MikeHaze made some rather unexpected decisions by choosing King Dedede and the Green Greens stage.
Although it was typically believed that Donkey Kong had a near unwinnable match up against King Dedede due to a chain grab setup with strict timing. As MikeHaze wasn’t a King Dedede player, he was hoping to rely on the walls provided by Green Greens’ stage hazards to secure the chain grab infinite far more easily.
However, MikeHaze clearly did not account for the amount of chaos that would unfold due to these decisions. Hear about Coney’s retelling of these events — with video footage of the match — in the video below:
