The Caddie’s $1,350,000 Call; The Million-Dollar Crucial Tip Tiger Woods Received That Dramatically Changed the 2008 US Open appeared on www.essentiallysports.com by EssentiallySports.

Caddies play a significant role in the golfer’s performance, and when your caddie is as experienced as Steve Williams, the significance just increases manifolds. Williams and Tiger Woods used to share a very special fiduciary relationship when he used to caddie for the golfer.

The golf legend used to trust his caddie’s judgment and advice so much that he even trusted Steve’s gut feeling during a major tournament back in 2008 and went on to win over $1 million.

In his book, “Out of the Rough”, the New Zealander shared an excerpt about how his strength of researching the course and compiling yardages came to so much use during the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. Studying the course and compiling yardage is not sufficient alone, as there is one other crucial factor: understanding the strength and direction of the wind.

On page 27 of his memoir, Williams narrates an incident he had with his former boss, Tiger Woods, in 2008. Reflecting back on the advice he gave Woods on the 72nd hole, he shared that he asked him to “ignore the yardage book” and to hit the club that he thought would deliver the best result.

The 15-time major winner’s former caddie also revealed that he had one “hell of a discussion” with the legend, but in the end, his “gut feeling proved correct” and the golfer was able to make it to the playoffs. Sharing about the other side of the story and what would have been the result in case the Golf Hall of Famer would not listen to him, Williams wrote, “If he’d gone with the normal club for that yardage he’d probably have hit the ball too far and given himself a much tougher birdie putt.”

Well, in the end, it all worked out, as Woods emerged victorious in the 2008 US Open and won $1,350,000. However, as per the caddie, not everyone is as trusting as Woods; some golfers are extremely particular about yardage, for instance, Bernhard Langer!

According to Williams, his precise knowledge of yardage, wind, and golf courses would not have been so useful with the German legend, Bernhard Langer. The 59-year-old shared that he caddied for the German a couple of times and was a “stickler for perfect yardages.”

Williams mentioned that Langer would make him count yardage, and then he himself would count and then compare the two! And if there was any difference between the two, the process of measuring would begin again!
