Genealogical Society looks at artifacts appeared on www.observertoday.com by observertoday.com.

Pictured are artifacts from Chautauqua County.

The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society was “enlightened” at June 21 meeting.

Local historians Karen Livsey and Sam Genco presented their program on “Chautauqua Obscura” to members and guests. Information on local “obscure” items and artifacts, and little — known stories of early residents and events are continually being researched by the two historians and adding to our Chautauqua County history.

A large rock found during the excavation to rebuild the Route 20 at Canadaway Creek Bridge in Fredonia in 1894 was found with an inscription in Latin. “Vos est unos aetatis mancipium ex monoi in 1830.” It has had a few different translations over the years and could be from the anti-Masonic period around 1826. Some call it the Fredonia “Rosetta Stone.”

The current location of the stone is unknown, but could have been used in the rebuild of the foundation of the bridge.

The black “object” in the foreground of the picture was found at the Canadaway Creek near where the bridge is in Fredonia. It is quite heavy and of unknown composition. Speculation is that it might be graphite. The rings appear to be in a spiral and man-made. Purpose presently unknown. Another of the same type of object was found in the Creek.

J. Irwin Flynn, who died in 1951, was a land owner in Ashville and was buried in the Ashville cemetery in Chautauqua County.

He was a passenger/survivor on the maiden voyage of the Titanic.

Karen and Sam will do their Chautauqua Obscura 2 presentation at the annual picnic. The subject matter will be mainly on exotic animals running wild in Chautauqua County and a separate presentation on Lake Erie Shipwrecks. This should be a most entertaining program.

This meeting/Annual Picnic will be Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the Ottoway Park, Route 5, Westfield. Pavillion opens at 4 and closes about sunset.

Brief meeting will be at 5:30, after which the meal will be enjoyed by all. Program will start after the meal. Stay for the sunset. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service.
