Robert Downey Jr Admits He Was Scared The MCU Ruined His Acting Skills appeared on screenrant.com by ScreenRant.
After more than a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. admits he was once worried that playing Iron Man would have ruined his acting abilities. Marvel Studios’ inaugural actor kicked off the MCU in 2008 via Iron Man. Since then, he had become the face of the franchise until he ended his stint as Tony Stark in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame
Downey has had a couple of projects in his post-MCU career, but Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is definitely the biggest. As he tackles one of his biggest acting challenges in recent years, he admits in a new interview with New York Times that focusing on the Marvel franchise scared him about losing his acting abilities. Read his full quote below:
Yes. A hundred percent, and I knew there was a point where Chris Nolan was endorsing, let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things.
Robert Downey Jr‘s 10 Years As Iron Man Made Him Worried About Acting In Oppenheimer
Boasting a star-studded ensemble including Cillian Murphy as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh, Downey plays Lewis Strauss in the much-anticipated Oppenheimer. This marks the first time that the former MCU star is part of a bigger cast wherein he isn’t top of the billing list following his decade-long role as Iron Man. It doesn’t mean, however, the work is any easier. While the pressure to spearhead a massive project may not solely be on his shoulders, there’s expectation for him to deliver some of his best acting, considering all the talent that he is surrounded by.
For what it’s worth, it never seemed like Downey just coasted his way through the MCU. Granted that he shared some of Stark’s signature qualities, but the actor always delivered great performances. It didn’t matter whether he was headlining the film such as in his trilogy, part of an ensemble like in the Avengers movies, or essentially a supporting character, which was the case in Captain America: Civil War, Downey always brought his A-game. This was a big reason why seeing him as Iron Man was always exciting.
Perhaps Downey’s fears are rooted not in being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but instead of playing the same character for 11 years. The lack of variety meant that it was easy for him to slip in and out of Iron Man’s shoes. Now that he is out of the Marvel bubble, he can take a variety of roles moving forward, starting with Oppenheimer.
