We investigated the cause of viruses spilling over from animals to humans and what can be done to stop it. Through our research, we discovered that Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is a potential hotspot for virus outbreaks.
Using a computer model, we analyzed data on previous disease outbreaks, landscapes, and population patterns, and identified areas with similar characteristics that could be susceptible to future outbreaks. While we expected to see some familiar areas that had experienced outbreaks before, we were surprised to find Nigeria highlighted on the map.
Nigeria has never had an Ebola outbreak, but it was the source of another virus, monkeypox, which spread to Europe and the Americas just a year ago. Although monkeypox is rarely fatal, it raises concerns about the potential spread of more deadly viruses like Ebola.
When we asked Nigerian public health officials about their concerns, they stated that Ebola was no longer a top priority. After the devastating 2014 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, Nigerian officials were on high alert. However, they have since downgraded Ebola in relation to other infectious diseases like monkeypox that they are actively fighting.
This disconnect between our model’s analysis and the views of Nigerian health officials highlights a weakness in the way governments and public health experts prepare for future pandemics. Current methods focus on post- outbreak factors and past cases, rather than addressing the root causes of virus spillover.
To effectively prevent future pandemics, we need to shift our approach and prioritize understanding the underlying causes of virus transmission from animals to humans. By addressing these root causes, we can develop targeted strategies to mitigate the risk and protect human health.
