It’s going to be a rainy Independence Day | Chennai News – Times of India appeared on timesofindia.indiatimes.com by TNN.

CHENNAI: Sunday night’s rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms added to the city’s rain records and brought both day and night temperatures down. The widespread intermittent rain was due to wind convergence and wind instabilities in the atmosphere. Weathermen have forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms on Independence Day.

The downpour lasted through early Monday and inundated many major roads such as Arcot Road. The city’s suburbs received rain on Monday evening too, leaving 28mm in Meenambakkam. Three international flights, including one from the middle east were diverted to Bengaluru because of heavy rain and cross winds.
As of Monday morning, rain records in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam touched 354.9mm and 455.3mm since June 1. This was 121.8mm and 186.3mm excess. During the same period, Tamil Nadu recorded 161.9mm against a normal 152.9mm, which is 6% above normal.

The rainfall also led to a drop in minimum temperatures, which were 23.6C and 21.6C in the two city stations, two and four degrees below normal. The temperatures on Monday dropped to near normal with 33.7C and 34.7C in the two stations.
S Balachandran, deputy director general, IMD said the southern states may witness thunderstorms when there is a break in monsoon rainfall in the northern states. They originate from the west and strengthen as it moves towards the east coast resulting in rainfall in the late evening hours. “The line of convergence of westerlies and southwesterlies is lying over north Tamil Nadu. There is also wind instability between the lower and the upper atmosphere leading to the formation of thunderstorms moving from west to east, strengthening near the coast,” he said.
On Tuesday, the city and the suburbs are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas as skies may remain partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures may be around 36C and 25C-26C.
Blogger Pradeep John called the midnight spell ‘freak rain’ and observed that rainfall lashed north Chennai, which missed previous spells of rain.
Places such as Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Kolathur recorded 9cm rainfall, while Perumbur and Ayanavaram recorded 7cm.
