As a mother of two beautiful daughters, I can say with confidence that the incredible family I currently have would not be possible without abortion.
My pregnancy journey has been incredibly long and difficult — it is the reason why my two daughters are nearly nine years apart.

It was early 1997, and I was newly married with a 4-year-old daughter from a previous marriage. My husband and I wanted more children, and by late spring, I was pregnant. My first pregnancy being uneventful, we settled in for an easy few months with expectations of a baby due in March 1998.
Then, one Friday afternoon in early September, I started spotting. I called my obstetrician and was asked to come in immediately. Upon arriving, an ultrasound was conducted, and my worst fears were confirmed — there was no heartbeat.
My husband and I were devastated. We lost our dream of welcoming a child into this world together. State Issue 1: Ohio’s abortion issue on the November ballot (dispatch.com).
When most people think about abortion, they don’t think of people like me, who desperately wanted to be pregnant. But that’s exactly what I did next.

The grief of this monumental loss still incredibly fresh, my doctor told me that if I didn’t undergo an abortion to remove the dead fetus, I risked developing a uterine infection that could jeopardize my life. And so, for my own life and my family’s, I did what I never thought I would have to do – I ended the pregnancy.
I am incredibly grateful that I had the option to choose my life and my family’s life.
While abortion remains legal in Ohio today, our right to reproductive autonomy could be snatched away at any point by the Ohio Supreme Court, reverting us back to a six-week abortion ban.
Had this ban been in place when I needed an abortion, the confusion, fear and anxiety that many patients and doctors experience while abortion restrictions are in place could have severely limited my family’s options and likely delayed the life-saving care I needed, potentially even putting my life at risk.

While attacks on abortion intensify in Ohio and across the country, the state of maternal care is worsening. The United States has an abysmal maternal mortality rate that is significantly worse than other wealthy, developed countries. Recent data from the CDC shows a roughly 60% increase in mortality overall rates in 2021 from 2019.
Further, in the past two years, Ohio has had more people impacted by overall reductions in access to maternity care than any other state. 13 of Ohio’s 88 counties are maternity care deserts and approximately 97,000 Ohioans in the state have been impacted by reduced access since 2021.
It was my decision to get an abortion to protect my life. I know that pregnancy can be both a joy and a complicated burden. And it is because of my experiences that I believe wholeheartedly that every person should be able to make choices about their own reproductive health.
That is why I, as a mother, as an Ohioan, and as someone whose life and family was saved by an abortion, will be voting yes this November to enshrine abortion rights in Ohio’s constitution. Individuals, not governments, should be able to make decisions about their own health, for themselves and for their families.
Banning abortion is not the way to create healthy, growing families. If we want Ohioans to feel safe and supported in their pregnancies, we must ensure they are able to make choices that best align with their own health and wellbeing.
