Paraguay international Antonio Sanabria has denied claims that he spat at Lionel Messi before revealing that his family have received threats after the incident.
This comes after images appeared to show Sanabria, a youth product of Barcelona, spitting in the direction of Messi during Paraguay’s clash with Argentina.
The pair exchanged words before Messi turned away and Sanabria appeared to spit in his direction, which led to the Argentine to deliver a furious response after the match as he said: ‘The truth is, I don’t even know who this guy is. I didn’t see him. They only told me.’
Sanabria has now taken to Instagram to break his silence on the accusations, as he denied spitting at the Inter Miami forward.
‘I feel obliged to go out and deny what happened last night,’ he began.

‘For the simple fact of seeing my family affected and due to multiple threats for an event that never happened. I would never do anything similar to any colleague or any person out of respect.
‘What example would I be giving to my daughters by committing an act like that? I recommend that you see all the images.’
This comes after the Torino forward told TyC Sports after the match that the replay looked worse than it was.
‘Nothing happened with Messi. It seems like I spit out, but there’s nothing to see, it was far way and I totally deny it,’ he said in the immediate aftermath.
Despite Messi not appearing to know who Sanabria is, the Paraguayan will be ever so familiar with his opposite number.
Messi was the star of Barcelona during Sanabria’s time in La Masia, where he never went on to make an appearance for the La Liga side before joining Roma in 2014.
Amid the drama in the match, Argentina came out 1-0 victors and continued their perfect start as they look to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
It’s three wins out of three for Messi and Co, with Nicolas Otamendi’s goal being crucial in beating Paraguay.
