Talks in Brussels dragged on Thursday night as efforts continued to form 27 EU states into a credible and coherent mosaic on the Middle East conflict.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was among those searching for a common position that would be “balanced” – recognising the right of Israel to self-defence (or even retaliation) in the wake of barbarism while mindful of the need to keep loss of life in Gaza to a minimum.
