As the cannons were still thundering on the front lines — men falling like leaves on the fields of death and glory of the Great War, a war to end all wars — the French and British were conniving to divide the collapsing Ottoman empire between them.
Civil servants Mark Sykes and Francois Georges-Picot, in a deceitful pact, drew lines on a map that created the borders of the current Middle East. In doing so, they broke up communities, villages and towns, simply on the basis of their usefulness to imperial interests.
