Taylor Swift Ties Adele As Her Latest Radio Smash Won’t Give Up appeared on www.forbes.com by Hugh McIntyre.
Taylor Swift rules over the Radio Songs chart again this week with her smash single “Cruel Summer.” The singer-songwriter is already one of the most successful artists of all time on Billboard’s ranking of the tracks that reach the largest audience across all radio stations in the U.S. each week, but this frame is special. With another turn atop the tally, she matches another one of her contemporaries–a woman who has also proved her talent in crafting a radio behemoth.
As of this frame, Swift ties Adele for the third-most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart. The two women have both racked up 40 weeks atop the competitive list throughout their careers. Of course, the ways in which they reached that sum are very different.
This week, Swift’s current focus “Cruel Summer” is still going strong. The tune has now lived at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart for a dozen frames. That makes it far and away her longest-running leader. It recently became her first to rack up double-digit turns in first place on the list.
“Cruel Summer” is one of Swift’s eight No. 1 hits on the Radio Songs chart. Before this latest electro smash dominated, the singer’s biggest win on the tally was “Blank Space.” That cut held court in first place for half a dozen turns.
Adele may be tied with Swift with 40 weeks spent at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart, but she hit that figure with fewer rulers. The British powerhouse vocalist has only pushed five tracks to the peak position, but they usually live in first place longer than Swift’s, on average.
“Easy on Me” ranks as Adele’s longest-running No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart, with 15 weeks in charge. That tune also holds as one of the 10 longest-ruling cuts in the rankings history as well. Her other massive win “Hello” controlled the tally for 11 frames. Both “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain” held on for half a dozen turns–Swift’s lengthiest stay, until recently.
Among all artists, Swift and Adele still have a way to go before they catch up to the all-time most successful musicians. Mariah Carey remains in a distant first place, with 91 weeks spent at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart. Rihanna comes in behind her, with 72 frames in charge of the tally.
