ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and several other state political figures are issuing statements after an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania.
The incident left an attendee dead and two others injured, according to the Associated Press. The gunman was reportedly shot and killed by the Secret Service.
“It is great that President Trump is doing well,” DeSantis said on X. “It is sad beyond measure that a rally attendee was killed and that others were wounded.”
DeSantis went on to say that the American people “deserve answers” about how the shooting happened and information about the gunman.
Leaders within the Tampa Bay area also posted statements on social media. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor stated she was “sickened” by the event.
“I am praying for Donald Trump and his family, as well as any innocent victims,” Castor stated. “America is better than this.”
St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch also offered a statement on X, saying ” There is no place for the violence we witnessed today at Donald Trump’s rally in PA.”
“I pray for any innocent victims and for a quick recovery by former President Trump,” Welch said on X. “We should all condemn this political violence and recommit ourselves to a better future for our Country.”
The attack was the first attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981, according to AP.
Trump’s campaign said the presumptive GOP nominee was doing “fine” after the shooting, which he said pierced the upper part of his right ear.
