Tesla Model Y ‘Juniper’ May Follow Path Of Model 3 Refresh appeared on www.forbes.com by Brooke Crothers.

Speculation about a refreshed Model Y reignited after a Reddit post seemed to show a “new” Model Y in camo wrap.

But it may be too soon to assume a Model Y refresh is imminent. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said as recently as last month that “No Model Y ‘refresh’ is coming out this year.” And he added: “I should note that Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better.”

So, unless the Tesla CEO has done a 180 on his thinking in the last few weeks the supposed “test mule” that appeared in the photo may be just that: a test vehicle that often appears many months before the final version is launched.

But reliable conclusions can be drawn from the Model 3 refresh: the Model 3 refresh likely offers clues to the Model Y that would launch in 2025. That would include the following Model 3 “Highland” upgrades:

  • The Model 3 Performance has more horsepower (up to 510 hp) and does 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds.
  • The front end has a sleeker hood (bump removed) and low-profile headlights for better aerodynamics.
  • “Frequency response dampeners” which provide a smoother ride in the refreshed Model 3.
  • Upgraded tires and wheels for increased range and less noise.
  • Ventilated seats.
  • A quieter cabin due to 360-degree acoustic glass.
  • A rear screen for passengers.
  • Removal of the stalks on the steering wheel.
  • A gear selector integrated into the touch screen.
  • Upgraded sound system.

Model Y needs a refresh, says Edmunds: “Tesla is now delivering vehicle volumes like a legacy automaker, and legacy automakers know that a fresh lineup is what keeps customers coming back,” Joseph Yoon, Edmunds’ consumer insights analyst, told me in an email. “The Model Y’s popularity is undeniable, but as more automakers introduce comparable EVs to the market, it only makes sense for Tesla to freshen it up with the same types of updates unveiled for the Model 3,” he said.

Rampant Reddit speculation: Needless to say, some Reddit posters are speculating that a Model Y refresh is coming sooner rather than later. With one poster — seeming to imply he works at Tesla in some capacity — saying that the Model Y refresh will hit this November or December. And while there will be similar upgrades as seen on the Model 3, not all upgrades will be the same, the poster claims. Some exterior upgrades may be different, including headlights, according to the post.
