Defense Department announces new Arctic Strategy appeared on www.alaskasnewssource.com by Josh Rultenberg.

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The Defense Department has released a new strategy to protect the Arctic Region. The federal government is zeroing in on the area as Russian and Chinese fighter jets were recently intercepted in international waters near Alaska.

Video released last week off the coast of Alaska showed Russian and Chinese bombers flying together. It was put out by the Chinese government.

The Pentagon said it was not a surprise and U.S. forces tracked the planes the entire way.

“Which demonstrates that our forces are at the ready all the time. And we have very good surveillance capabilities,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Alaska Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) expressed their frustrations on social media to the incident which took place three days after DoD introduced its latest approach to defending the Arctic.

“The Arctic region of the United States is critical to the defense of our homeland,” said Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks.

Hicks said the department’s new Arctic Strategy is to enhance its capabilities and engagement with allies while exercising presence in the region. She said this will ensure the Arctic stays secure and stable even with increased Russian and Chinese activities.

Hicks said, “While not an Arctic state, the PRC seeks greater influence in the region greater access to the region and a greater say in its governance.”

DoD officials said climate change has also caused increased risks for the Arctic due to melting ice creating new sea routes that our adversaries may try to exploit.

Officials at the Wilson Center, a nonpartisan think tank, recently hosted a forum to discuss the new strategy.

“We need a clear and concise approach to the Arctic, and the Defense Department’s new Arctic strategy answers that call,” said Ambassador Mark Green, who is the Wilson Center’s President & CEO.

White House officials have said the U.S. remains concerned about China and Russia’s collaboration and their efforts that do not promote global stability and security, not just in the Arctic.
