BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Senator Rand Paul and Congressman Brett Guthrie were in town Thursday to talk to prospective servicemen and women about their future.

They were joined by representatives from each of the branches of the military, as well as WKU’s ROTC program to answer any questions about service or what it takes to serve their country.

We caught up with Senator Paul after he spoke to students and their families. He told us what he and Representative Guthrie look for in picking out the students that apply to their academies.

“You want not only smart people, you want athletic people, but you also want good people. You want people to understand that, yeah, we have to use our military force sometimes, but we don’t want to, that we’re reluctant to go to war… and I always re-emphasize that from my perspective, as someone who votes on whether or not we go to war, then I look at each of those individual kids and try to think of them in making decisions whether or not a war is justified or not,” Paul says.

Students have until November 14th to apply for Congressman Guthrie’s academy, while Senator Paul’s application period closes on November 15th.

As a West Point grad himself, Guthrie is honored to help pick out the future of a service he knows incredibly well.
