Kamala Harris Says She’d Put A Republican In Her Cabinet If Elected appeared on www.forbes.com by Molly Bohannon.

Topline

Vice President Kamala Harris would put a Republican in her Cabinet, if she’s elected, in an effort to represent “all Americans,” she said in a highly anticipated interview with CNN airing Thursday night.

Key Facts

Harris told CNN’s Dana Bash she thinks having a Republican Cabinet member “would be to the benefit of the American public,” adding she has spent her career “inviting diversity of opinion.”

“It’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences,” Harris said, according to a network preview of the interview, which will air in full Thursday night at 9 p.m. EDT on CNN.

Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump did not appoint Cabinet members from the other side of the aisle, but it’s not uncommon for a president to appoint a Cabinet member from another party—George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all did—or to make it a campaign point in an effort to gain support, Politico reported.

News Peg

Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, sat down with Bash in Georgia on Thursday for their first interview since President Joe Biden left the race in July and they accepted the Democratic nominations earlier this month. Harris’ lack of formal interviews has become a frequent criticism of hers from former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who have held a number of press conferences recently. Her lack of interaction with the press led to a number of think pieces and op-eds suggesting her reasoning for avoiding the media, and The New York Times published 21 questions reporters would ask her were they given the chance.

What We Don’t Know

Who Harris has in mind for a potential Cabinet member from across the political aisle. CNN reported the vice president did not have a particular name in mind when she made the comment.

Surprising Fact

Before the 2020 election, Biden’s transition team was reportedly vetting Republicans to be in his Cabinet, which would have brought back the tradition of doing so that was disrupted by Trump, Politico reported. Biden said prior to winning in 2020 he would appoint a Republican if they were “the best-qualified person to do it,” Reuters reported, but he ultimately did not.

What To Watch For

What else Harris discusses in the interview. The CNN preview of the interview said Bash, Harris and Walz touched on a number of key topics, including Harris’ reversal on some policy positions and Trump’s suggestion that she has changed her racial identity.
