UK reports first case of new mpox strain appeared on www.openaccessgovernment.org by Harriet Belderbos.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the first case of a new strain of mpox, known as clade 1b
This strain is believed to spread more easily than other previous strains and could be a potential challenge for public health. The detection of clade 1b, which was announced on 30 October, shows a need for extra vigilance in preventing its spread.
What is Mpox?
Mpox is a viral illness that was first identified in 1970. While the disease had mostly been confined to certain parts of the world, recent outbreaks in 2022 raised global awareness.
The UK has seen cases of mpox since then, mainly caused by clade 2, a strain that spreads through close skin-to-skin contact or by touching contaminated fabrics like clothing, bedding, or towels.
However, the newly identified clade 1b strain has raised concerns because it is believed to spread not only through direct contact but also through respiratory droplets.
This means it could potentially spread more easily in community settings, especially when people are in close contact or sharing spaces with someone who is infected.
What are the symptoms of Mpox?
The symptoms of mpox can start with:
- A high temperature
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
- Backache
- Swollen glands
- Chills or shivering
- Exhaustion
- Joint pain
A rash often appears within a few days of these symptoms, typically beginning on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body.
Public health advice and workplace safety
While the UKHSA has stated that the risk to the general population remains low, it is important that employers continue to follow public health guidance and take appropriate precautions. Employers are urged to protect staff and the public by adhering to the latest infection control measures outlined in the NHS National Infection Prevention and Control Manual (NIPCM).
UNISON, the public services union, is encouraging employers to engage with their staff and unions to ensure that proper safety measures are implemented. This includes ensuring frontline workers have access to the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), sick pay, and other support.
What employers should do
Employers should make sure that they are following all relevant guidelines and are prepared to take swift action should a case of mpox occur in the workplace. Frontline staff, including healthcare workers, are at a higher risk, and extra care should be taken to prevent transmission.
UNISON has produced a comprehensive guide to help branches engage with employers on the steps they need to take, from ensuring PPE provision to reviewing sick pay arrangements. This will help create a safer work environment and ensure staff are supported throughout the course of the pandemic.
