Mathematicians are excited about a new discovery: a 13-sided shape called “the hat”. Lots of copies of the shape can be used to cover a flat surface without ever overlapping or leaving any gaps. Importantly, the patterns made with the hat never repeat.

On June 16, a huge chunk of rock and dirt fell from a mountain above the Swiss village of Brienz. Somehow, the rockslide missed the village by a “hair”. The road leading to the village was damaged, but the village itself appears to have been unhurt.

Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois. On September 1, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years – since he was 23 years old.

On November 8, an enormous new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flights in California. The huge airship was built by LTA Research, a company that’s hoping to make an old method of transportation new again.
