Robotics, manufacturing, building trades offered at Shop Rat Foundation STEM camps

JACKSON, MI — The Shop Rat Foundation back this summer with STEM camps for kids after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Shop Rat Foundation, which began in 2006, is offering three camps in June, July and August at the Jackson Area Career Center, 6800 Browns Lake Road, focusing on science, technology, engineering and math to help kids have fun and keep learning through the summer break from school.

“Just ‘Bots” is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27-30, and gives students an opportunity to work with LEGO and Vex robotics. This course is offered for fifth through eighth graders. Registration ends Friday, June 17, and costs $100.

“Introduction to Manufacturing Camp” is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11-14, and introduces campers to computer-aided design, precision machining, robotics and welding. This camp is offered to sixth through twelfth graders and costs $100.

“Introduction to Building Trades Camp” is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 8-11 and gives participants an introduction to building trades, such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing and more. This course is for grades sixth through ninth and costs $100.

The Shop Rat Foundation also is offering an “Advanced Manufacturing Camp” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1-5 at Lansing Community College West Campus, 5708 Cornerstone Drive. This camp is offered for sixth through 10th graders and introduces participants to precision machining, mechatronics/robotics and welding. This camp costs $125.
