A resolution to censure — like the one Republicans passed against Rep. Adam Schiff this summer — carries no set official penalties in the U.S. House, but can result in fines, a formal reprimand on the House floor, or removal from committee assignments at the House’s discretion. Balint’s censure resolution, then, is not so much a realistic play to have Greene removed from the political process as it is a return salvo, likely responding to Greene’s own motion to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

Tlaib, who is Palestinian-American, expressed solidarity last week with a protest led by Jewish activists opposed to Israel’s war on Gaza. Greene then accused Tlaib, who previously called Israel “an apartheid state” in a floor speech earlier this year, of being antisemitic, “sympathizing with terrorist organizations,” and planning an insurrection (an obvious deflection from the January 6, 2021 attempted right-wing insurrection, which Greene has been accused of helping foment).

“This is an Islamophobic attack on the only Palestinian-American in Congress — fanning the flames of hate at a time when Muslim Americans are already facing increased threats & violence,” Balint wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Thursday afternoon after reading her resolution on the floor. “I won’t stand for it.”

Even though a censure won’t likely result in any major consequences for Greene (especially in a Republican-controlled House that can finally vote on things again), it’s at least a little encouraging when Democrats fire back against their right-wing colleagues who spread ignorant conspiracy theories about marginalized people. On the other hand, there’s also an upcoming Republican-sponsored motion to completely expel one of MTG’s close allies: everyone’s least favorite stunt queen and alleged serial con man George Santos, so we’ll get to roll those dice twice when the House returns next week. Boy, isn’t it such a pity when the Right eats itself?
