A Journey of Learning, Collaboration and History appeared on www.touro.edu by wearetouro.
Dr. Marco Buschmann, the Federal German Minister of Justice, addresses the crowd at the special conference on antisemitism marking the 20th anniversary of Touro University Berlin.
My conversations with student leaders, faculty, and staff were enlightening, as was my meeting with the president of Victoria University. We explored potential collaborations, an essential dialogue given the current global situation.
“The events of the 7th of October shook us to our core. The atrocities committed by Hamas…are among the most heinous crimes against humanity. The impact they have had on Israel and on Jewish everywhere is beyond measure.”
– Dr. Marco Buschmann
A Timely Conference on Online Hate and Antisemitism
The highlight of my trip was on the second day when I attended the conference on November 9th, a date marking a dark chapter in history with Kristallnacht, the anti-Jewish pogrom of Nazi Germany. The conference focused on critical research into online hate and antisemitism, presenting a timely and relevant topic.
Distinguished guests included Dr. Marco Buschmann, the Federal German Minister of Justice, and Dr. Felix Klein, the Commissioner for Antisemitism. They emphasized Germany’s commitment to the Jewish community and the State of Israel.
Dr. Buschman shared “joyful acknowledgment of the amazing work of Touro University in Berlin over the last 20 years… Rooted in Jewish tradition, built on Jewish values, that is Touro University’s motto. The message it represents is not one of exclusion, but of welcome. The Jewish values it invokes are in fact, as this University so clearly demonstrates, universal values. Touro’s Master of Arts in Holocaust Communication and Tolerance is a vital program. Just how vital has been painfully brought home to us in recent weeks…”
“In light of recent weeks and today’s world, we in Germany are more likely to think of the pogrom of the 9th of November 1938 than the birth of Germany’s first democracy, the Weimar Republic, or the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The events of the 7th of October shook us to our core. The atrocities committed by Hamas…are among the most heinous crimes against humanity. The impact they have had on Israel and on Jewish everywhere is beyond measure,” continued Dr. Buschmann.
The discussions about new legislation to protect the Jewish community and combat hate were powerful. The research presented offered insights into online hate speech, its psychological impacts, and effective countermeasures. This underscored the importance of vigilant and informed responses to online antisemitism and racism.
My contribution centered on the challenges Jewish students now face on U.S. college campuses in the wake of the war in Israel and Gaza and I offered potential solutions to the rise in religious and race-based conflicts.
Remembering a Fallen Israeli Soldier
An unexpected change in travel plans took me from Berlin to London and then to Tel Aviv, where I attended a shiva for a fallen American Israeli soldier. The service was a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict. Remembering her as a talented writer and a warm individual, it reinforced the need for collective efforts towards healing and breaking the cycle of violence.
Lessons Learned and a Path Forward
This trip was more than a visit abroad; it was a journey through history, culture, and current global challenges. From the halls of Touro University Berlin to the shiva in Tel Aviv, each experience was a reminder of our shared responsibility to educate, collaborate, and stand against hatred and intolerance. The lessons learned and connections made will undoubtedly influence our ongoing efforts to create a more understanding and peaceful world.
