Abortion hotline receiving support, but pushback from pro-life advocates appeared on www.koat.com by KOAT.
A year after the Roe v. Wade decision, the New Mexico Department of Health is addressing concerns about reproductive care and keeping abortion legal. Last week, they started a new hotline staffed by medical professionals.”They’re really experienced in terms of helping New Mexicans, you know, access health resources and doing health assessments over the phone,” Madison Schaeffer with the New Mexico Department of Health said. She said the goal is to make seeking abortion and reproductive health options easier. They have received calls from across New Mexico, but also from people in Texas, and even as far as Tennessee. “We can meet somebody’s needs immediately and tell them ‘we’ve got appointments next week here and we can get you in,” Schaeffer said.Ethel Maharg is the director for love life, but also knows the experience of abortion.”I was one of those people, unfortunately, that took part in that,” Maharg said.A choice she said changed her life. Years after her abortion, she has been advocating for children before they’re born.”The problem that we have is that we’re not acknowledging that it’s a life,” Maharg said. “It’s a child.”The department says the hotline offers resources for more than just abortion. Things like access to transportation, sexually transmitted disease prevention and testing, as well as family planning and birth control are other resources. Maharg believes investments should be put into support families.”How about we help them pay their rent?” Maharg asked. “How about we help make their lives a little bit easier for that? How about we fix you know, we call this organization the Orphan Crisis.”Schaeffer said “At the end of the day, we’re here to help people access resources. We are a health care resource.”More than 11,000 abortions were performed in New Mexico last year, more than twice the number from 2021. There have reportedly been over 5,000 abortions performed this year. The hotline is: (1-833-767-3776).
