Adele Hagood Obituary (1935 – 2022) – Charlotte, NC – Charlotte Observer appeared on www.legacy.com by Legacy.com.

Dr. Adele Dunbar Hagood
February 9, 1935 – November 18, 2022
Charlotte, North Carolina – Dr. Adele Dunbar Hagood, 87, of Charlotte died peacefully in her home Friday, November 18, 2022. Adele was born in Charlotte on February 9, 1935, the younger of two daughters of William Ward Hagood, Jr. and Adele Dunbar Hagood.
Adele grew up at the family’s home on Carmel Road and graduated from Central High School in 1953. She was truly a Tar Heel born and bred and graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957. After graduation from UNC, Adele became a guidance counselor at what was then Queens College in Charlotte. Later she moved into the admissions office where she rose to become head of admissions. Her experience at Queens piqued her interest in psychology, which ultimately led to her attending Duke University where she earned her Ph.D. in psychology in 1975. Although she loved her time at Duke, she was always a Tar Heel. When she returned to Charlotte, Adele opened her own practice as a career counselor. She was highly successful and well known in the community for helping people to find their best path in life. Over the years, we heard wonderful stories from people whose lives she had touched with her work and with the love and caring she showed them through her continuing interest in their lives. She especially loved her friends, and she was blessed with many long and fulfilling friendships in Charlotte, Chapel Hill and beyond. Adele‘s deep and abiding love for all creatures great and small was one of the special memories we have of her. She had a particular affection for golden retrievers, of which she had many over the decades. Adele‘s wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and general brilliance made her such a joy to be around. She was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where she grew up attending with her mother. For many years, she sang in the church choir, and she served on the Vestry at one time. As a woman of faith, a lifelong learner and an always curious student, Adele sought and received a Certification in Theology from Sewanee – The University of the South in 1995. She was proud of her service to UNC as a member of the Morehead Scholarship selection committee.
Adele is survived by her sister, Sally Hagood James of Charlotte; her nieces, Adele James Glascock and her husband, Jimmy of Chattanooga, TN, Susan Parkin James and her husband, Steve Weintz of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Sally James Lucas and her husband, Joe of Charlotte, as well as numerous great-nieces and grand nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 6, 2023, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Adele to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 115 West 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.
Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
