AI-created Drake, The Weeknd song removed from streaming services after going viral appeared on www.cleveland.com by Zach Mentz, cleveland.com.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – An artificial intelligence-created rap song replicating Drake and The Weeknd’s vocals has been removed from streaming services at the request of music label Universal Music Group.

The AI-made song, “Heart on my Sleeve,” went viral in recent days after being uploaded to TikTok by a user named Ghostwriter977, who said in a since-deleted post they wrote and produced the song.

A clip of the song – which has since been removed – was viewed more than 20 million times from one tweet posted April 16, and the song was streamed more than 600,000 times on Spotify, in addition to being streamed on YouTube, SoundCloud, Amazon and more platforms.

“I was a ghostwriter for years and got paid close to nothing just for major labels to profit. the future is here,” Ghostwriter977 wrote in a TikTok comment, according to NBC News.

UMG, however, which represents both Drake and The Weeknd, called the fake song a “violation of copyright law.”

“UMG’s success has been, in part, due to embracing new technology and putting it to work for our artists – as we have been doing with our own innovation around AI for some time already,” UMG said in a statement to Music Business Worldwide. “With that said, however, the training of generative AI using our artists’ music (which represents both a breach of our agreements and a violation of copyright law) as well as the availability of infringing content created with generative AI on DSPs, begs the question as to which side of history all stakeholders in the music ecosystem want to be on: the side of artists, fans and human creative expression, or on the side of deep fakes, fraud and denying artists their due compensation.”
