Anti-abortion laws wrongly perpetuate slavery’s cycle of rape and forced birth: Letter to the Editor appeared on www.cleveland.com by Other Voices.
Before the Civil War, slavery reproduced itself through forced pregnancy and births. Slaveholders either raped enslaved women or forced enslaved men to do it. The babies born into slavery increased the master’s wealth.
Slavery depended on the humanity of its victims while denying them human rights. The 13th and 14th Amendments exist to eliminate all vestiges of slavery, including this cycle of rape and forced birth. The U.S. Supreme Court, therefore, was wrong in concluding that these amendments had nothing to do with reproductive rights.
Anti-abortion laws recreate one aspect of slavery by denying supposedly free women the right to control their own bodies. Denying that freedom forces women into bodily servitude.
Please do not believe the lies of Issue 1?s well-funded opponents. Issue 1 does not affect parental notification rights at all. Late-term abortions will still be restricted like they were under Roe. Also, Issue 1 has nothing to do with transgender issues.
Ohio’s current draconian “heartbeat” abortion ban (now on hold pending judicial review) has no exceptions for rape, incest, or the safety of the woman. Read it for yourself, and don’t pretend it contains terms that are not there in writing.
