Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) is receiving backlash from a fellow Arizona Democrat after she spoke at the McConnell Center on Monday about the importance of bipartisanship.

Rep. Ruben Gallego accused Sinema of wanting Democrats to lose control of Congress in a series of tweets, asserting that she is not helping Democrats win their campaigns.

During her speech, Sinema said she views Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), after whom the center is named, as a friend, noting that Arizonans do not “view life through a partisan lens.” She said during a Q&A following her speech that the House and Senate are “likely to change” within the next few weeks. The McConnell Center is located at the University of Louisville.

As of Sept. 19, Politico’s tracker for the November midterm elections shows the House likely to have a Republican majority. The Senate is still a toss-up.

Gallago, in response to Sinema’s comments, wrote a series of tweets expressing his disappointment with her seemingly distancing herself from her party.

“I mean you could be out there helping our candidates @SenatorSinema,” Gallego tweeted. “But my sense is that you would actually prefer the Dems lose control of the Senate and House.”

“Now that I think of it. I have been traveling the state and country. Donating, raising funds and encouraging people to come out and vote and I have seen you nowhere,” he added in another tweet.

Sinema’s team declined to comment on the tweets but told the Washington Examiner that the Arizona senator has given over $140,000 to Democratic candidates in this cycle alone.

SINEMA SAYS SHE SUPPORTS REINSTATING FULL FILIBUSTER

During her speech, Sinema stressed the importance of bipartisanship, stating that extreme voices are “dominating the discourse and set the agenda.”

“From my experience, everyday Americans don’t immediately retreat to partisan corners in their day-to-day lives,” she said. “In fact, most of us believe those partisan labels needlessly divide us.”

The Arizona Democrat went on to say that continuing to engage in toxic politics will not “solve the problems that plague us” and that more could be accomplished if leaders on both sides of the aisle reached out to compromise.

Sinema referenced several acts of bipartisanship that she joined, including the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and the CHIPS and Science Act, arguing that these successes represent “lasting results” that occur when senators work together regardless of political affiliation.

“We can reject extreme partisanship, ignore the noise on cable news and the zero-sum political games, and instead focus on what unites us — choosing to work together to make progress on the issues that matter most to the Americans we serve,” Sinema said.

She continued, “Imagine what more we could accomplish if more leaders joined me in this approach — if, rather than staying in their comfortable partisan corners, more leaders reached out in a genuine desire to find good faith compromises and craft durable solutions to our country’s most difficult challenges.”
