Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has just stepped down from a press conference at an aged care home south of Adelaide, where he was promoting the Maggie Beer Foundation’s aged care cooking program alongside Aged Care Minister Anika Wells and the program’s founder, Maggie Beer.
After heaping praise on Beer as “one of the most respected of Australians”, he addressed Qantas boss Alan Joyce’s appearance at a Senate hearing yesterday, where the outgoing chief executive confirmed the airline held $370 million in outstanding COVID-19 travel credits.
“I think that when people have bought flights and paid money, they should either get access to another flight or they should receive their money back,” he said.
He also responded to comments today from Virgin Australia chief Jayne Hrdlicka, who dismissed the government (and Joyce’s) claims increased flights would have created a market distortion.
“There is nothing unusual about a nation state not having access to unlimited flights wherever they like to go, whenever they’d like to go,” he said. “Australia has exactly the same situation, where Australian airlines are restricted from where they fly into.”
Albanese is in South Australia to announce the date of the Voice referendum alongside Premier Peter Malinauskas tomorrow.
