Better viewers left with questions after ‘obscure’ ending appeared on www.leeds-live.co.uk by LeedsLive.

Better viewers have been left with plenty of questions following the ending of the fourth episode of the Leeds-based crime drama.

In the latest episode, DI Lou Slack unsuccessfully tries to set up drug dealer Col McHugh. Col, played by actor Andrew Buchan, retaliates by taking her son Owen hostage (although Owen is oblivious to the part he plays in his plans).

During an emotionally-charged showdown, Col goes as far as to point a gun at her head but can’t bring himself to pull the trigger. He eventually lets her go but warns that this would be her last chance.

He tells her: “Go home. Donal will bring back Owen unharmed and this is the last time we see each other. One f****** chance.”

He adds: “Ever come after me again, Lou, everything changes.”

Not satisfied with the way things had been left, she seeks advice from her ally Vernon Marley. During their conversation, one of Col’s man, who had been unhappy with his boss’s decision to let DI Slack go unharmed, breaks into the house to try and kill her.

Instead, she manages to fend him off and Vernon shoots him in the chest twice, killing him as a result. He then tells DI Slack, who is played by Leila Farzad, to leave and to pretend she was never here before setting his house on fire.

He calls emergency services and tells the operator: “I’ve shot an intruder dead, then set my house on fire.”

The episode ends with DI Slack at home, looking a little shell-shocked as she takes in the domestic scene at home. Better viewers have been left wondering how she will get herself out of this mess and still take down Col.

Others have predicted she might be killed off in the last episode. @sam__wxm wrote: “Where do we go from here indeed that ending was rather obscure.”

They later added: “That phone call at end was just obscure I’ve heard of better 999 calls but this is better after all so it anything that better might be worse.”

@OliReading wondered: “#Better where to from there?”

@PolygoniaSpec said: “Gunshot, two minutes before she leaves and no neighbour will have seen her car leave.”

And @daryl_millar commented: “I see no reason to keep her alive at this point (apart from plot necessity).”

Meanwhile, many were impressed by actor Anton Lesser, who plays Vernon, and said he should be given a Bafta. @moneyandmedia said: “Immediate 2024 Bafta for Anton Lesser.”

@PolygoniaSpec agreed, saying: “Anton Lesser is better than the rest.”

And@KBSquared4 commented: “Anton Lesser forever.”

The last episode of Better will air on Monday on BBC One at 9pm. All episodes are available to stream as a box set on iPlayer as well.
