Tech giants Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have grand plans for private space travel and the colonization of other celestial bodies, but Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates has decided to prioritize challenges here on Earth. In a recent podcast interview, Gates explained his reasons for not joining the space race with Musk and Bezos.
Gates stated that he does not consider himself a “Mars person” and questioned whether rockets are the solution. Instead, he prefers to focus on investing his resources in more pressing matters. Rather than spending money on a space ticket, Gates would rather use it to purchase life-saving measles vaccines, which cost only $1,000, a fraction of the price of a trip to space.
Gates, Musk, and Bezos, who are among the world’s wealthiest individuals, have a combined net worth of $512 billion. Musk envisions using SpaceX’s rockets to transport 1 million people to Mars by 2050, with the goal of establishing a sustainable colony on the Red Planet. Bezos’s company, Blue Origin, is working towards facilitating lunar bases and space colonies that could potentially accommodate up to 1 trillion people. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are developing reusable rockets to reduce the cost of space travel significantly.
However, Gates believes that addressing climate change and reducing emissions on Earth is of utmost importance. He highlights the need to make industries such as steel, meat, and cement greener and more sustainable.
Gates also expressed his belief that Musk has the potential to become a great philanthropist in the future, given the positive impact of ventures like Tesla Inc. However, he does not expect Musk to spend most of his fortune on personal pursuits, apart from occasional trips to Mars.
While Musk and Bezos focus their resources on space exploration, Gates remains committed to investing in solutions that will directly benefit the well-being of people on Earth, such as vaccines and climate change mitigation efforts.
