The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a big game coming up this week against the Detroit Lions, and as their post-Brady era has gotten off to a superb start there’s a quarterback drawing comparisons to that G.O.A.T. looking to derail those efforts.
Coming in at 4-1 the Lions are Kings of the NFC North for now and led by quarterback Jared Goff who Buccaneers coach Larry Foote recently compared to Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and soon-to-be HOF’er, Tom Brady.
“I remember [when] he was drafted because I was in Arizona,” Tampa Bay’s passing game coordinator and inside linebacker coach Larry Foote recently said of Goff. “His only bad year, in my opinion, was probably his rookie year. With [Sean] McVay in his second year, he just took off. He’s a good, savvy quarterback. What’s unique about him [is] I put him in that group with [Tom] Brady and [Peyton] Manning as far as the play action – they sell it, they do a good job of selling it. As a linebacker, that can be tricky, because it looks the same. He’s making every throw and he’s a No. 1 pick.”
Ok, so he only compared Goff to Brady and Manning in one facet of his game, but anytime you mention a quarterback in a company with names like that it’s bound to attract attention.
Not that this matchup needed much more attention.
In a clash of first-place teams, the Buccaneers also come into Week 6 as division leaders after toppling the New Orleans Saints in Week 4 to take the sole position of the top spot.
Additionally, this is the Bucs’ throwback game with the return of ‘Bucco Bruce’ and the creamsicle uniforms getting all fans excited for a game so intriguing the NFL decided to flex it to a late afternoon time slot.
That alone is a compliment from the league, and acknowledgment that Detroit and Tampa Bay have two of the most interesting teams in the it – imagine that.
In the all-time series, the Lions lead 31-29 but the Buccaneers have won the last two meetings and three of the last five dating back to 2013.
