The California Department of Public Health has confirmed the first U.S. case of a new strain of monkey pox. The U.S. joins five other countries outside of Africa to confirm a case of the new strain since August.
The strain, named “Clade-One,” was confirmed in a person living in the San Francisco Bay area, where they have been isolated and are recovering. It is more severe than the strain that began to spread widely in 2022.
The first case outside of Africa was detected in Sweden last August and has been confirmed in Germany, India, Thailand and the U.K.
Public health officials say there is no concern or evidence that the strain is spreading in the U.S.
