Carole King Charts An Important New Hit Album, With Help From James Taylor appeared on www.forbes.com by Hugh McIntyre.
It’s been well over a decade since Carole King last released an album, and it seems that she may never do so again. The beloved singer-songwriter is responsible for a catalog that’s filled with successful projects and smash singles that continue to sell well and rack up streams every day. From time to time, when special occasions arise, fans propel her music back to the charts, and in some instances, even help her past efforts finally debut on one tally or another.
The talented songwriter returns to a number of charts in the U.K. following the BBC Two airing of a documentary focused on her relationship with friend James Taylor. Both musicians benefit from this publicity, and they even collect a new hit on one chart together with a collaborative album.
Live at the Troubadour lands on a pair of rankings in the U.K. this week. It debuts on one of them, earning King just her second career win on that list, which was introduced long after most of her biggest albums and songs had already topped other charts and enjoyed a moment in the spotlight. The live recording, which celebrated the birthday of the legendary music venue the Troubadour, debuts at No. 20 on the Official Album Downloads chart.
King had only landed on the tally once prior to this frame, as Tapestry debuted on that list in 2009. In the years since, it has racked up 30 stays somewhere on the ranking of the most-downloaded albums throughout the country, peaking at No. 5.
Speaking of Tapestry, that bestseller also gains ground thanks to the documentary viewing. The recipient of the Album of the Year Grammy is back inside the top 10 on the downloads-only chart as it reappears at No. 9. The same hits-packed collection is also present once more on the Official Album Sales chart, where it’s a top 40 win as it settles in at No. 36.
Live at the Troubadour appears on two charts in the U.K. this week, and its performance on the downloads list is most impressive. The King/Taylor recording is also back on the Official Physical Albums chart, which is decidedly different from the downloads roster, and it makes a home at No. 55.
Both King and Taylor double their total appearances on the Official Album Downloads chart this week, though they do so with a different number of appearances. King has scored just two placements, including this latest smash, but Taylor is now up to six. Three collections from the singer-songwriter—The Essential, Greatest Hits, and Live at the Troubadour—debut on the tally this time around.
