TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Several changes to Florida’s mental health programs are awaiting Governor Ron DeSantis’ signature.
The legislation would increase mental health funding by millions of dollars.
The Baker and Marchman acts outline the process for individuals experiencing mental health crises or dealing with substance abuse to receive involuntary treatment. Some believe the process is traumatic, especially for children, and lacks follow-up care for the those released from involuntary holds.
A bill unanimously passed in the House and Senate modifies current guidelines. It requires parents be notified about involuntary evaluations of kids and allocates $50 million for follow-up care programs.
Additionally, the measure takes into account any prior history of related problems. This step could reduce the number of unwarranted Baker Acts, especially among the youth.
Some lawmakers say more changes will likely be enacted during the next legislative session. If Governor DeSantis signs the current bill into law, the new modifications would take effect July 1.
