Charlie Bird ‘Still Completely Stunned’ After Meeting Bruce Springsteen appeared on extra.ie by Extra.ie.
Charlie Bird has revealed he is ‘still completely stunned’ after his dream to meet Bruce Springsteen came true.
The former RTE journalist, who has been battling motor neurone disease since October 2021, was deeply moved when The Boss dedicated a song to him when he recently played at the RDS arena.
The 73-year-old, who can no longer speak as a result of the disease, wrote he could not believe The Boss dedicated Land Of Hope and Dreams to him during the show.
Charlie, who got to meet his idol backstage said the meeting was only made possible thanks to the immense support he has received from the Irish public.
He said: ‘I am still completely stunned by what happened meeting Bruce last Friday.
‘I could not believe that he told the fans he was singing the song ‘for my friend Charlie Bird’.
‘This happened because of the amazing support I have got from people all over the country. I love you all.’
Before the gig Charlie had made no secret of his wish to meet the singer when he wrote: ‘I still have one thing on my bucket list, I would love to meet Bruce Springsteen when he is here.
‘I want Land of Hope and Dreams to be played at my funeral. This is mad, but I go to sleep nearly every night playing this song, along with The Parting Glass.’
He later told how he spoke to the Born In The USA star backstage using his voice app and ‘really believes we connected’.
His wife Claire, who he first met at a Springsteen gig 16 years ago, was with him for the special moment.
He said: ‘Last evening I was blown away at being brought to meet Bruce Springsteen backstage before his concert.
‘We had a couple of hugs and I used my voice app to talk to him.
‘Then he dedicated Land of Hope and Dreams to ‘my friend Charlie Bird’. Oh God, Bruce is a great human. My final wish has happened.’
He added: ‘What a magical moment for me and my beautiful wife Claire. Bruce was so kind and a fantastic human.
‘I played my voice app and I really believe we connected.
‘I told Bruce Land of Hope and Dreams was on my bucket list, and he said he would play it for me. And God, he did. I love him.’
