China’s Xi wants to play peacemaker in Israel-Palestinian conflict appeared on www.newsweek.com by Aadil Brar.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said the top priority is to prevent the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from expanding.
Xi made these remarks during his meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who was in Beijing for the Third Belt and Road Forum. His remarks are his first public mention since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East.
“The top priority is to bring about a cease-fire and end the war as soon as possible to avoid the conflict from expanding or even getting out of control and causing a serious humanitarian crisis,” said Xi during the meeting late on Thursday.
In his remarks, Xi again backed the two-state solution, a position Beijing has held for a long time.
“The fundamental way out to resolve the recurring conflict between Palestine and Israel is to implement the ‘two-state solution,’ establish an independent Palestinian state, and achieve peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel,” Xi said.
Xi said that China appreciates Egypt’s role in calming the situation and supporting the effort to set up a humanitarian corridor. China will strengthen coordination with Egypt and other Arab countries to promote a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, Xi added.
In response to Xi’s remarks, the Egyptian leader Madbouly said that Egypt and Arab countries appreciate China’s “consistent and just stance” on the Palestinian issue and “look forward to China playing a greater role in resolving the current crisis.”
Tuvia Gering, a researcher at the Tel Aviv University-affiliated Institute for National Security Studies, recently said on Spectator-produced podcast Chinese Whispers that China has the aspiration to be viewed as a world leader, and its support for the Palestinian cause is likely to shore up Beijing’s influence in the Middle East.
On Thursday, Zhai Jun, China’s Middle East envoy, said that “China opposes and condemns all actions that harm civilians” during a meeting with Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s special representative for the Middle East and Africa.
“China and Russia hold the same position regarding the Palestinian issue,” Zhai said during the meeting with Bogdanov.
Zhai is in Doha to speak with regional partners to resolve the current conflict. On the same day, Zhai told Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Al-Hulaifi, “Qatar has an important influence on the Palestinian issue, and China is willing to maintain communication and coordination with Qatar.”
On Thursday, the Chinese foreign ministry expressed “deep disappointment” over the U.S. veto on a Security Council resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
